Selling on the corner of 183 and 360 in the fall began with my two kids, our dog, and me. Back then, cell phones were a novelty, large, and costly, with charges by the minute. I utilized my phone for information only, posting daily updates about our corner location. The slow internet helped me track new beanie releases, as many customers lacked internet access and relied on my updates. Initially, sales were thriving with beanies priced slightly above retail, attracting customers who preferred buying from us over waiting in store lines. However, in November, two women set up nearby, undercutting my prices. Faced with competition, I purchased their beanies and was fully stocked for Christmas. Unfortunately, police intervention led to the closure of our street corner operation. The sight of heavy machinery tearing up our selling spot left me wondering about my next steps in this unexpected turn of events.
